Eye wrinkles are particularly common in both men and women. The skin around the eyes is thinner and more sensitive than skin on other areas of the face, and hence, more wrinkling tends to occur in this delicate area. While there is no surefire way to guarantee you will never wrinkle, there are steps you can take to help prevent eye wrinkles.
Things You'll Need:
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Moisturizer
Humidifier
Anti-wrinkle eye cream
steeped tea bags
cucumber slices
cool cloth
hypo-allergenic moisturizer
mirror
Step 1 - Wear sunglasses. The sun is very damaging to skin as it causes premature aging and wrinkles. Sport some sunglasses to guard against the sun's harmful rays. In addition, sunglasses help you to stop quinting which causes wrinkles.
Step 2 - Avoid squinting or scrunching your eyes. Repeated facial movements lead to wrinkles. At first, the wrinkles will only appear when you make the movement. Over time, the wrinkles will remain there even when your face is relaxed. You can prevent these wrinkles by avoiding these damaging movements. Try not to squint or scrunch your eyes, particularly when you are concerned or upset. Check in with yourself periodically throughout the day to ensure you are not holding tension in the eye area.
Step 3 - Apply moisturizer to the eye area daily. Moisturizers plump up dry skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines which lead to wrinkles. Keep the eye area well-hydrated to prevent wrinkle formation.
Step 4 - Sleep with a humidifier. Dry air has a direct effect on the skin. A humidifier will keep the air moist, thereby helping your skin to maintain moisture levels. Regularly sleeping with a humidifier has been shown to keep skin moist and discourage fine lines.
Step 5 - Invest in a good anti-wrinkle eye cream. Anti-wrinkle creams for the eyes tend to be more intensive than those for the face in general. Because the eye area is more delicate, it can handle a creamier, richer cream than the rest of the face. Take care when applying the eye cream. You should pat the cream lightly on the areas. Never rub or pull the skin.
Step 6 - Sleep on your back. If you sleep on your stomach or side, you may be unconsciously irritating the skin around your eyes while you sleep. The pillow may be pulling or rubbing the area and encouraging wrinkle formation. It's best for your skin if you can sleep on your back with your entire face completely free from pressure from the pillow.
Step 7 - Be gentle on your skin. Know that the area around the eyes is very sensitive. Do not rub, scratch or press on the eye area as these movements can lead to wrinkles. Apply lotions and sunscreens gently, using your ring finger for application. As it is your weakest finger, it is the least likely to cause damage to the area.
Step 8 - Allergies can play havoc on your under eye area. If you have hay fever or seasonal allergies, consult your allergist or physician. Try not to rub your eyes, as this can irritate the skin and make it puffy and saggy. Gently wash your eyes several times a day with a warm cloth until your allergy symptoms subside. Do not rub with the cloth, just gently dab at your eyes to help soothe the itching and burning. Only use eye drops if recommended by your physician. Cool cucumber slices over the eyes and covered with a cool cloth can help soothe the tissue and reduce puffiness.
Step 9 - Begin a daily routine of facial exercise. This helps to tighten the skin just as exercising your abs helps flatten your tummy. With eyes closed, arch your eyebrows as high as possible and hold it there for ten seconds. Elongate your face by dropping your chin and raising your eyebrows with your eyes open for 10 seconds. Use your middle finger to gently massage the area under your eyes to the right and left. Be gentle! Don't irritate the skin, just stimulate it. Repeat these exercises three times daily. End your exercises with cool cucumbers or steeped chamomile or green tea bags over the eyes, followed by a cool cloth. Again, do not rub the eyes.
Step 10 - Our skin relies on good nutrition just like the rest of our body. And as we age, our skin loses collagen. Eating healthy and getting beneficial doses of vitamins is very important to good skin health. Some suggest that Vitamin E is the skin, hair and nails vitamin. Talk to your doctor about a Vitamin E supplement, and ask for other recommendations for herbal or vitamin supplements.
Step 11 - There are a number of remedies for under eye wrinkles. What works for one person might not have much of an affect on someone else. Experiment carefully until you find the treatment(s) that work best for your skin type. Other remedies include do not smoke because this causes premature aging and yellowing of the skin, a honey and oatmeal mask can tighten and soothe the skin, get plenty of rest and moisturize well before bedtime, unscented castor oil can be beneficial, but test first for sensitivity.
Tips & Warnings
- Drink lots of water and maintain a healthy diet. Both are imperative to healthy skin.
- Be careful using anti-wrinkle creams that contain alpha-hydroxy acids on your eye area. Since the skin is so delicate there
- Never try any product or treatment without testing it on a small area of your skin first.
- If you take medications, consult your physician before adding any herbal, mineral or vitamin supplements.
- Use an SPF of 15 or stronger when in the sun or any outdoor activities.
